Within this category, we encounter a wide range of everyday objects, tools, and gadgets – items that might seem banal at first glance but can offer subtle insights into participants’ routines, habits, and interests. These images sometimes speak volumes, and other times remain open to interpretation. Does a suitcase mean frequent travel? Does a Louis Vuitton bag signal high social status? Perhaps – or perhaps not.

Some clues are clearer: swimming goggles likely belong to someone who enjoys sports; a notebook suggests an organized person or a lover of writing. We find evidence of pet owners – both cat and fish lovers – alongside doctors identifiable by their work clothes.

Air conditioners hint at hot climates, while PlayStation consoles suggest solitary leisure time. Shopping bags, headphones, and photo cameras reveal consumer habits and creative pursuits. Clocks, calendars, and alarm clocks speak to a focus on time management, while keys and passports evoke mobility, transition, and readiness for movement.

Together, these objects form a mosaic of daily existence, sometimes revealing intimate truths, sometimes offering only hints—leaving space for both researcher interpretation and participant privacy.

“It symbolizes my wish to see the world through a new lens — with a sharper, more attentive eye – so that I can capture hidden aspects of reality.

Italy _ Participant 4, March 2024

“Right now, I have beside me an object that, in many ways, reflects how I’m feeling: a camera. It symbolizes my wish to see the world through a new lens — with a sharper, more attentive eye — so that I can capture hidden aspects of reality. This desire is closely tied to my experience as a migrant.

I feel a deep connection to the idea of discovering and exploring new horizons — cultural as well as visual. I don’t want to stay fixed in one place; I feel the constant need to keep moving, travelling, observing, and opening myself to new horizons of possibility and new realities”
