In the context of migration, Christmas imagery can carry multiple layers of meaning:, a symbol of new traditions being embraced, or a seasonal ritual that momentarily bridges distances and differences.

Although Christmas is traditionally a Western and Christian celebration, elements of this festive season appear with some frequency in the video diaries. They surface in decorated trees, strings of lights, ornaments, Christmas markets and Santa Claus. For some participants, these objects can reflect adopted customs from the host country, embraced as part of integration or simply enjoyed for their beauty and festive spirit.

Unsurprisingly, Christmas references appear often among Thai participants settled in Finland—the land of Santa Claus—but they also emerge in the diaries of Chinese participants living in Portugal and even among those -not yet migrants- living in Vietnam. This widespread presence suggests a certain universality of the celebration, whether it is lived as a religious holiday, a cultural event, or simply a shared moment of joy.

“We just decorated the Christmas tree these two days, and I feel that the tree only comes alive at the end of the year.”

“What object can represent my current feelings? It’s a bit like the small ornaments on the Christmas tree. We just decorated the Christmas tree these two days, and I feel that the tree only comes alive at the end of the year. I feel that I can only come alive at the end of the year (laughs).”
